T-Shirt Quilt

My husband - like a lot of husbands - has about a million t-shirts. And somewhere along the way I decided he needed to purge a few. (I’m the nicest wife ever, no?) So, slowly, over about 3 months I took a t-shirt or two at a time and eventually collected 30 shirts. Mike is not dumb, he noticed, but he couldn’t identify a single t-shirt he was missing.

I couldn’t really find a good source for exactly how to make a t-shirt quilt, so I picked my MIL’s brain on how to go about it. This was a total team effort - I stole all of the t-shirts, bought the fleece and cut out all of the t-shirts. My MIL sewed the whole thing together and delivered the final product! Mike then got to unwrap it for Christmas, and he loves it! Though he did make a point to tell me he was upset that I took three of them because they still fit.

What you’ll need for a 6×5 foot blanket:
30 t-shirts
A piece of cardboard that is 12.5 inches by 12.5 inches
A sewing machine
A permanent marker
6×5 foot piece of sleece

  1. Cut out your piece of cardboard, it will be your pattern for cutting out your t-shirts.
  2. Trace around your piece of cardboard onto your t-shirts and cut out each one. It’s a pain, but the final product is actually worth it I promise!
  3. Sew together all of the t-shirts, then line up the piece of fleece and sew it to the back of the t-shirts.

Just for the record, my husband still has three full drawers of t-shirts.

I love it!! I have always wanted to make one of these, but I totally suck at anything related to the sewing machine. I’ll have to practice some!
