Flipping Pages: Vanity Fare
I am going to add a book review segment into the blog - nicknamed “flipping pages”. I promise not to bore you with cheesy romance novels or endless books on food… though this one might be the exception. My apologies. I also promise not to list any spoilers, but you should know that I love all things that end happy.
The book opens with Molly Hagan - a newly 40 year old divorcee, raising a son in NYC. Her ex husband turned her into a cliche when he left her for a younger blonder version of herself. She of course left her job while they were married since she “didn’t need to work” to raise their only son. Now, she’s wondering what she’s going to do with her life and she’s convinced this is rock bottom.
Her ex calls to inform her that he was laid off, which is when everything gets worse. Suddenly she can’t pay the bills, feed her son, and is worrying about health insurance. An old friend calls her with some freelance work and she’s thrown into corporate presentations, copy writing, and the politics that come with it all. Somewhere along the line her mom moves in and she finds herself in the middle of a love triangle.
My favorite part is that Caldwell manages to show Molly’s flaws - sitting through therapy sessions, dealing with issues we all face and still manages to make you root for her. Girl power is always a good message!
Overall: Vanity Fare is entertaining and funny. Nothing too serious, not the standard story, but a quick, light read. I like these types of books because I truly believe books are mini vacations.
Overall rating: 3 whisks out of 5 … too cheesy?
